Stepping-Stone Park

A pocket park where an afternoon disappears.

This is a proposal. It is an idea for Sheboygan, not a city plan or a decision.

The dream

A small, shady park on the cleared lot, half-way along the walk between the lake and the Arts Center. Shade trees. A long picnic table. Benches. A drinking fountain and bottle filler. A washroom. A little free library. One big swing. A path of big stepping stones set in grass, so the path itself is part of the fun. A small heated pavilion with a fireplace makes it work in January.

A painted stepping-stone line could run on from the park toward the Arts Center, so the whole walk feels like one path.

Concept art: a neighborhood pocket park with big round stepping stones across a lawn, a timber pavilion with a stone chimney, a picnic table and a wooden swing frame.

Does it work?

Whether the demolition is finished, and how the ground was backfilled and compacted, is not confirmed. If it was compacted properly, light equipment and a small pavilion on proper footings look possible. Check the compaction record before anything heavy goes on it, and grade the ground to drain to the street. The swing needs a clear space around it, about twice the height of its pivot.

Open question

The idea also mentions one long open block between the park and the Arts Center. That block has not been identified yet, so this page leaves it out.
