What it feels like
A day in the new Sheboygan
Nobody has to plan the day around a bathroom or a warm room.
This is a proposal. It is an idea for Sheboygan, not a city plan or a decision.

A summer day
- Morning
A bus comes every ten minutes, free. Ride three stops to Deland.
-
Swim in the lake before work. A rinse shower is right there, and a warm changing room, and a locker for your bag.
- Lunch
At lunch, walk the promenade. Every few hundred steps there is a shady bench, a bathroom with a green light, a bottle filler.
-
Take a swing on the Swing Trail for ten seconds, because you can.
-
Your phone is dead? There is a plug on the bench.
- Evening
Evening at North Beach. Just a beach: sand, water, a long stone bench. No fences, no vendors, nothing to buy.
-
The lights come on along the whole two miles. You ride the Free Line home, still free, still frequent.

A January day
- Morning
It is dark at 6:45 and the wind is off the lake. Your bus stop is heated, so you wait warm.
-
The Free Line takes you to the Geode, where the Water Floor is free and open to everyone.
-
You step into warm water with the lake out the window, and you feel like someone remembered you.
- Lunch
At lunch, walk Broughton with a thermos. The path is plowed first.
-
At North Point, a fire burns in the open hearth, and a few strangers are standing around it, saying hello.
-
At Vollrath the hill is full of sleds, and the lodge at the rim has a bench by the radiant panel.
- Dusk
On the ride home at dusk, a glass shelter glows ahead of you through the blowing snow.
Concept art. This is a proposal, not a plan.
