Armory Garden

A clean garden and arboretum in the middle of town, with a wall that tells the Armory’s story.

This is a proposal. It is an idea for Sheboygan, not a city plan or a decision.

The dream

A nature park downtown. Winding paths, native trees and prairie, and a small grove with a tree from every kind that grows around Lake Michigan. A pond that is only for looking. A stone and bronze memory wall that tells the Armory’s story. A swing at the garden’s edge, and a quiet place to sit.

The ground is treated with care: clean soil on top, within whatever the state requires, and no digging into old ground.

Concept art: a garden with a winding gravel path, a small pond, native trees, a stone memory wall and an open pavilion, with two people walking away.
Concept art. This is a proposal, not a plan.
Does it work?

Trees and beds would sit in imported clean soil, in mounds and raised beds thick enough that roots stay in the clean layer. Paths would float on gravel and stormwater would drain across the surface. What the state’s continuing obligation actually requires is not yet known, so this design is a starting point, not a plan.
