The old Senior Activity Center is gone. Now it's a big grassy field ringed by houses, a block from the Y. County vehicles park on it.
I think it should be a park. Open, kept up better than any park in town, and a short uphill walk to the Arts Center. Let's claim it for the public before it gets claimed for a deal.
What a park is for
Nothing. That's the point. A park is a place where nothing has to happen. No transaction, no program, no ticket. Kids, dogs, lunch, naps, frisbee.
Sheboygan has Maywood, beautiful trails and a lake. What it doesn't have is a real central green, the kind of place a neighborhood gathers just because it's nice to be there.
Hands, not contracts
Parks fade when the city stops taking care of them itself and hands mowing and repairs to a stack of vendor contracts. A park people love needs the city's own crew: people who mow, fix, plant and show up.
So the idea isn't just the land. It's the people who look after it.
