Fare-Free Sheboygan: Two Budget Moves

The Common Council votes on the 2027 budget Monday, Nov 2, 6 PM, at City Hall.

The 30-second version

Free buses cost about $497,000 to $623,000 a year in net cost at today's service level. Two budget moves cover about $613,000 a year. That nearly covers it, with no new tax category and no referendum. Everybody rides free.

The two moves

1. Keep transit steady

Make Shoreline Metro's $279,945 gap regular city funding. Today it is covered with one-time CARES Act and ARPA money.

2. Add $10 to the wheel tax

Add $10 to the $30 wheel tax already passed. That brings in about $333,000 a year.

Together: about $613,000 a year, against a net cost of about $497,000 to $623,000 a year.
